Anchorage 101
Head Out Of Town On A Day Trip Sections
Take a day trip from Anchorage to enhance your vacation. You have three directions of travel: South, North, and East. (Turnagain Arm, a shallow body of water lies to the West.) Travel South on the Seward Highway to access coastal fishing communities, boat tours, and large mountain passes. Travel North on the Parks Highway to small towns like Talkeetna that have a real "Northern Exposure" feeling. Travel East to the large river and glacier country of the Glenn Highway area. Day trips can easily turn longer than one day, so make sure you are not biting off more than you can chew, especially if you have a hotel reservation back in town. Roads are long and winding in Alaska with low speed limits, so a rule of thumb is that a day trip is rarely more than 100-120 miles in each direction.
Day trips from Anchorage will give you a taste of the rest of Alaska.
